Minister of National Health Mr. Afzal Tarar has written letters to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Finance Minister requesting them to increase Federal Excise on cigarettes in Pakistan from Rs. 32.98 to Rs. 44. It is further stated that 2% of the revenue collected will be spent on disease arise from smoking and control of smoking in the country.
He told that Pakistan signed a a global agreement of Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in year 2004. After this, Pakistan was bound to increase taxes on cigarettes. Increase of taxes is one of a useful tool in enhancing revenues of any country.
In order to comply the agreement of FCTC, health minister have formulated a working group comprising of members of WHO, FBR, Bloom Berg and Tobacco Control Cell. THis group has suggested that Federal Excise on cigarettes in Pakistan from Rs. 32.98 to Rs. 44. This action will reduce smoking from 2-13% while revenue will be increased from 5-39 Billions.
It is further advised that exemption granted to Navy, President of Pakistan, President AJK and their relatives may be withdrawn and manufacturing of cigarettes must be regulated in terms of quantity. Smoking in injurious to health and cause cancer and heart diseases and daily 3oo citizens lost their lives due to smoking.
